“Pass the message to kick out Coronavirus” campaign has arrived as health comes first, said FIFA chief
FIFA, the international governing body of football, have teamed up with the global health agency, World Health Organization (WHO) this week to combat the Coronavirus by launching a new awareness campaign led by world-renowned footballers such as Alisson Becker of Brazil, Miroslav Klose of Germany, Lionel Messi of Argentina, and others.
At least 28 world’s renowned footballers are involved in the video campaign, which is being published in 13 languages. Theyare calling on all people around the world to follow five key steps to stop the spread of the disease.
The “Pass the message to kick out coronavirus” campaign wants people to follow these steps to protect their health in line with WHO guidance, focused on hand washing, coughing etiquette, not touching your face, physical distance, and staying home if feeling unwell.
WHO Director-General Dr.Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at the virtual launch of the campaign at WHO headquarters in Geneva this week that FIFA and its President Gianni Infantino have been actively involved in passing the message against this pandemic since the very beginning.
“We didn’t know then what we know now, that a new virus would emerge, and that it would bring many parts of society to a standstill, including the beautiful game.
“Many football matches have stopped, but our collaboration has become even more important during these difficult times. In fact, it’s given us the opportunity of working together more closely than we imagined.
“Football can reach millions of people, especially younger people, that public health officials cannot.” said WHO chief.
FIFA President Infantino said FIFA has teamed up with WHO because health comes first.
“I call upon the football community worldwide to join us in supporting this campaign to pass the message even further,” said Mr Infantino. “Some of the greatest players to have played the beautiful game have put their names to the campaign and are united in their desire to pass the message to kick out COVID-19.”
Among those, for example, is Alisson Becker, from Liverpool FC and Brazil Goalkeeper, the Best 2019 FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper. He said in the video; “It starts with your hands. Please wash your hands frequently with soap and water or an alcohol-based solution.
“Such frequent washing with soap and water, or preferably with an alcohol-based hand solution, kills viruses that may be on your hands. It is simple, but it is very important,” said Becker.
Joining him in the campaign are also superstars like Miroslav Klose of Germany, Gary Lineker of England, Lionel Messi of Argentina, Michael Owen of England.
